COMMON VS. KANYE

This is how you stay fresh:

This is how you ruin your career:

On one side, you have a guy who’s last album was no big deal (let’s be honest, it had like 4 or 5 decent tracks, and I’m being nice), and has no reason to keep droppin’ albums cause he’s doing good in Hollywood. But still he’s got a new record coming out, and already released 2 tracks from it collaborating with no other than mister freshness himself…the result is obviously a step forward to Hip-Hop. Either you like it or not, this song is original, and the lyrics are on point.

On the other side, you have a guy who’s last album was MADE a big deal, cause it also only had maybe 5 or 6 really good tracks. I mean I love Kanye’s work, his creativity…but Graduation, although being the most advanced album in style, was also his weakest…and what does he do after this? Comes out with a fucking R&B/Pop song, trying to sing…and the worst part for me is that this song has serious mistakes in production.
This is one of the best music producers of the 21st century…and he releases something that sounds bad all along…and even makes a video for it. C’mon Kanye, don’t you have some assistant producer just to tell you the voice is all misplaced, out of tone (the vocoder doesn’t help, seriously), the background sounds don’t fit…I think I can even still hear the clapping from the first version of this song. It just sucks in my humble opinion…and I tried to like it.

But yeah, who gives a damn right..Kanye still gonna sell more than Common, and we all have to give him credit for trying to change…the thing is, this time, he changed for worse.

kanye’s love lockdown is an “interesting” song. i’m not gonna be bold and say it’s good or bad. it’s interesting. it’s an exploration in music, i would say. successful? i don’t know. a lot of people are doing the vocoder thing, and a lot of people are making it off (lil wayne’s voice sometimes doesn’t match the beat and it’s fine).

and with common, his song “my life” is definitely stronger. it really speaks. it’s about time he came through. with a track like my life, common wins this round. but i haven’t heard his whole CD yet. i went to a concert not long ago and he’s completely owning it these days
