The Good, The Bad, The Weird

The South Korea film industry is producing a lot of good movies nowadays. Although I’ve only seen big productions lately, very americanized and with not-so-good scripts, at least they’re doing it big.

The Good, the Bad, the Weird is a perfect example of what I’ve said above. It’s like a big american summer blockbuster, but in Korean. And don’t get me wrong, the movie is pretty nice, it just lacks a fitting screenplay, a more original plot, and it’s too long. I mean, 2 hours and 20 minutes for a modern western? C’mon people…

Anyway, the title is an obvious reference to the classic The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and one can even say it has some similarities, but few, very few. The Good, the Bad, the Weird doesn’t try too hard to fit in the classic genre, it gives a very modern and stylized approach to western movies.
Taken place in 1930’s Manchuria, you see machine guns, sidecar bikes and even army trucks battling around men in horses…you get those dumb awkward humoristic asian moments, very manga style, in the middle of the action sequences…and you hear a soundtrack with that spanish guitar melodies, typically western style, but with nice influences from russian music, rock guitars, asian drumming…overall is a nice mix of elements.

The aspect which I particularly liked the most in this film was costume design. Every character that appears on scene has a personality imprinted on his looks. The 3 main characters all have distinctive details in their clothing, hair, makeup…even covered in dust and sand they always look great on scene! The whole movie is very graphic and stylish just by looking at the actors.
This is a characteristic I’ve been noticing in the asian movies I watched recently. I think costume design is not well explored in the european cinema for example (except those boring epic movies ’bout the Renaissance age and stuff), and this is one thing producers and all the cinema people should learn from asians.

Go watch this flick if you’re into westerns or just want some good entertainment. And be prepared for its lenght.
