The Shawshank Redemption

It’s hard to write about a film that many consider to be the best of all time.
This movie holds the number 1 spot at the IMDB Top 250, being in front of such notorious names as The Godfather, Star Wars, Pulp Fiction and many others, so I really took my time just thinking about how to deliver a review for it.

So what can I say about this truly masterpiece, after watching it for the second time in my life? Not much, it’s just perfect.
It’s one of those timeless movies that you can watch over and over again and never cease to be moved by it, and specially be entertained by it. It’s amazing how this movie isn’t boring, not for a single second…and it is almost 2h20m long! The narration is flawless.
The story is just absorbing. It tells us about Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), a man convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife and her lover, who develops a friendship with another inmate (Morgan Freeman, in what many consider to be the best leading role he ever had) over many years, enduring some of the hardships of  incarcerated life and turning out to be anything but a “normal” prisoner. The main characters have all the depth of real persons, the screenplay is like a match made in heaven (and have in mind it was an adaptation of a short story from the notorious Stephen King), and even the cinematography stands out in the middle of all this brilliance.

There’s not much to it really, just go watch it expecting nothing more than a great movie. It’s one of those you can watch either at the age of 20 or 80, it’s always gonna make sense and leave something in the back of your mind. It’s a movie about freedom, hope and true redemption, one of those that really makes you feel these things as a viewer. One of the last of its kind, that’s for sure.

Just out of curiosity, this is also one of the biggest let downs in the history of the Academy Awards, being nominated for 7 Oscars and winning none…if I was old enough at the time to pay any attention to the Oscars, that would probably be the moment when I’d realize that those awards are mostly a bunch of bullshit.
